A sand/snowboarding game, where you switch between night and day to bypass obstacles

In-Game Screenshots

The Switcher was created in under 48 Hours for the Global Game Jam 2022, at Birmingham City University by Elijah Walton (Audio Engineer), Tashan Attawia and Charlotte Walker (Artists) and myself (Programmer).

The theme of the Jam was "Duality" and this game's core focus from the beginning was around the switching between 2 states to avoid obstacles. However, we wanted a bit more interaction than just pressing the swap key, so we added in the ability to jump and do flips, but have the player have to land their board properly, or they'd fail.

The game won Best Art and Best Presentation.

Key areas of development were:

  • Swapping everything that needed swapping between one state and the other with 1 key press

  • Keeping the player aligned with the ground normal
  • Checking the players angle relative the ground using its Up vector compared to the normal
  • Adding controller support
  • Getting it all done in less than 48 hours!
